More grooming machines acquired for snowmobile trails

Snowmobilers pay to ride in Ontario — now those fees are coming back to help carve and maintain snowmobile trails they use.  The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) announced $2.4 million in funding yesterday to be used to buy 22 new or upgraded grooming machines to augment the 339 currently being used by OFSC member clubs.

“It’s quite an investment in equipment. Every dollar spent on a permit stays on the snow.” Bill Ripley, first vice-president of the Paudash Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club

"We have one unit going into District 3, to the Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club," said Mike Farr, the OFSC's trails program manager.  The new groomer, a piece of heavy equipment used to create and maintain snowmobile trails, is valued at $209,000, Farr said.

Wayne Harpell, president of the Kawartha Lakes Snowmobile Club, said the Husky Prinoth groomer should arrive in the next couple of weeks after some work is done on it. The groomer is a demo model.

"It's the only one of its kind available," Harpell said.

The club, which maintains 166 kilometres of trails in the City of Kawartha Lakes, has two groomers, but one is 16 years old. The new one will takes its place, and the older one will be used as a spare and lent out to other clubs when required.

Harpell said the club's trails attract riders from Peterborough, Oshawa and farther.

Peterborough is at the junction of the OFSC's District 2, which runs north of Hwy. 7 as far as Bancroft, and District 3, which is south of Hwy. 7 and reaches Lake Ontario. Both districts span an area from Lake Scugog to the Bay of Quinte. Clubs maintain and run their own groomers, most of which are operated by volunteers.

The $2.4 million originates with riders who purchase annual permits to access the province's 40,000 kilometres of trails.

"It's quite an investment in equipment," said Bill Ripley, first vice-president of the Paudash Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club.  Ripley said each club keeps roughly half of the funds collected through trail pass sales, with the remainder going to the OFSC and its programs. This season's permit price is $250.
