International Safety Week: January 10-16, 2010 Last Update: 22-10-10 January 10-16, 2010 is International Safety Week - a time to reflect on all of the safety things that the volunteers, clubs and associations complete every year in support of organized snowmobiling. It's also a time for the riders to think about safety as we start our new winter season of riding. Be aware that early season rides come with additional risks - thin ice and trees that have blown down. Remember to dress appropriately – that 15 minute ride could turn into a 3 hour walk if you are riot prepared. Try never to ride alone - besides it is more fun to enjoy the day with a friend or family member. Safety Week will launch on January 10, 2010 in partnership with MADD Canada with Alcohol Awareness Day – remember that no alcohol is the smartest choice while enjoying the many rides into Canada's spectacular winter wonderland. January is the time that most are enjoying the first trip or saddle bagging as it is called – over-night kit into the bags on the snowmobile and off to visit friends or to make new ones. Snowmobilers are much like scuba divers in that their environment is not yet fully conducive to voice communication with everyone, so we have to rely on hand signals. Please use the internationally accepted hand signals.
Early January also brings the risk of thin ice or deep
slush so be prepared before you go – plan your day
outing or longer snowmobile trips by leaving an
itinerary with call back numbers and times for the "just
in case" or the "what if something happens" scenarios to
always end the same way – you return home safe and ready
to play another day. |
