Trail Status Reporting Tightens on Direction from the OFSC Board of Governors

Posted: January 20, 2009

The following Notice was posted in the December 2008 issue of the OFSC Main Trail Bulletin:

The Board of Governors recently discussed the risk management aspects of trail status reporting. On the advice of legal counsel, the OFSC has adopted the present system using the OPEN, CLOSED, LIMITED, and CLOSED TEMPORARILY. Using any other designations could open [the OFSC] to potential liability in the event of a claim.

The OFSC reminds clubs and districts with trail reports on their own web sites that any descriptive verbiage beyond the words listed above may increase your liability exposure if a claim is made. The safest way to avoid increased exposure is to only to place your trail reports on the OFSC site. The next best is to only report on your own site using exactly the same terminology as on the OFSC site. Anything more could come back to haunt you.
